# GCE A-Level 2009 H1 Maths 8863 & H2 Maths 9740 Paper 2 Suggested Answers & Solutions

(22)
Tuition given in the topic of H1/H2 (A Level) Maths Tutor from the desk of at 2:42 am (Singapore time)

Hello everyone, it’s me again.

I’ve been busy over the weekend with my classes and it seems that I’ve been missing out a bit of action on the H2 Maths Paper 2. Anyway I’ve found some time today to work out the following H1 Maths 8863 Paper 1 and H2 Maths 9740 Paper 2 (yes I know I’m bit WOLS on this one :P) just to complete my set of A Level Maths suggested solutions for this year (2009):

2009 ‘A’ Level October/November H1 Maths 8863 Paper 1 (left) & H2 Maths 9740 Paper 2 (right) Suggested Solutions – click to download

As usual, please check if they tally with your solutions and inform me (gently) in the comments below if you discover any mistake or disagree with any of the answers described within. This is especially so for the H1 Maths paper which there has been an absence of any discussion on it, as far as I know.

Now that the A-Level maths papers are over, I sincerely hope that all of you have managed to handle this year’s maths papers with confidence. I also hope that my shortlist of probable pure maths topics (a number of which indeed came out) has benefitted some of you in your last-minute revision.

Anyway, it’s time now to focus on the rest of your papers and try not to be caught up with all the speculative talk on moderation and worry about what grades you’re going to get (after all, no one really knows). Instead be glad that you have done your best and strive to work harder for your remaining papers!

Once again, all the best!

The H2 math paper, the question on hypothesis testing is whether the mean deviates from the assume value. Then shouldnt the variance be divided by 9 as well since it should be mean???

hx: Congrats, for I think that this H1 paper can be quite challenging for some Time to stay focussed to get your As for the rest of your subjects 😀

anon991: Are you referring to the t-test in Q10(ii)? If so, then I believe it has already been divided
i.e. , where s is the unbiased estimate of the population variance of X.

Hey, for H2 math p2, q6 on the world record running times. i think you may have misread the question. the values given in the table are seconds above 3mins and 30seconds. can you kindly clarify there?

Thanks!

hey for 11iv , if they state P(R=0 or 1) = 0.2
isnt it P(R=0) = 0.2 , P(R=1) = 0.2
so we can equate both tgt and use binomial formula to solve for p ?

Thanks for pointing it out Jocelyn. I think you are referring to the second para of answer of Q6(ii) - I actually realized it's t above 3 min 30 sec midway through Q6 but forgot to amend 6(ii) *sigh*

Anyway I've amended Q6(ii) to highlight that

a non-linear model (with a negative exponential function) may be more appropriate than a linear model since it is unlikely that the world record will decrease linearly with time, given that it's likely to be increasingly difficult to break it as we approach the limits of our human abilities."

Of course the above may not be true if we are talking about Usain Bolt but let's not go there ... 😛

ken: P(R = 0 or 1) = 0.2 actually means
= P(R = 0) ∪ P(R = 1)
= P(R = 0) + P(R = 1) since P(R = 0) ∩ P(R = 1) = 0 as 0 and 1 red car cannot be observed at the same time.

Think you got a little mixed up about independent trials in a binomial distribution. Though each trial is independent of one another, you can't assume that P(R = 0) = P(R = 1) = 0.2 since this is not a given in the question.
