Crouching Terrorist, Leaping Maiden

(23)
Tuition given in the topic of Study Break from the desk of Miss Loi at 11:31 pm (Singapore time)

WARNING: As usual, the following article contains extremely lame content which may offend you. Please DO NOT continue if extreme lameness disturbs you or if it’s illegal to view such material in your community.

On a day when girls from a certain secondary school got the unexpected chance to ogle at uniformed guys during school hours, Miss Loi was caught in a massive traffic jam at Woodlands Checkpoint (which caused her to be very, very late for her hair salon appointment in JB) – all because of an escaped terrorist who might still be crouching in a bush somewhere in your neighbourhood.

Seeing that the long train of cars was unlikely to be moving along any time soon, Miss Loi turned off the air-conditioner, mindful that the fuel gauge might have fallen below the three-quarter mark by the time she reached Customs.

Unfortunately, it was a pretty hot day and last night’s late tuition session began to take its toll as her eyes slowly drooped to a close …

.
.
.

Crouching Terrorist Leaping Maiden

When she opened her eyes she found herself standing in a clearing within a dense bamboo forest, dressed in an ancient Chinese costume. Crouching behind a grove of bamboo was a familiar-looking Malay man.

Alamak! Aku pakai Mesin Waktu lari sampai dua ratus tahun yang lalu tapi kamu masih menjumpai aku!

With that, the startled Malay man took off and leapt high onto one of the bamboo trees, perching himself precariously on one of the branches.

I dunno what you’re talking about but I know you – you Evil Terrorist! You made me late for my hair salon appointment! I’m very angry so I’m gonna catch you and bring you to justice!

With that, an angry Miss Loi discovered that she could also leap high onto another bamboo tree – and thus began her hot pursuit of the terrorist in earnest.

And so they leapt, from branch to branch and tree to tree, scattering leaves to the forest floor with each passing jump. There were several close shaves as Miss Loi sidestepped at the last minute several deadly bamboo trees that she found to be rigged with explosives by the wily terrorist.

Just as she was about to catch up with the terrorist, he made one mighty leap (complete with two-and-a-half somersaults) to land on the forest floor once more, before disappearing into a cave.

With another mighty leap of her own (hers came with three-and-a-half somersaults), Miss Loi entered the cave only to find the entrance shutting itself behind her – leaving her all alone inside!

Once she’d gotten over her shock, however, she found something akin to a touchscreen plasma TV on the wall. It was displayed on the screen:

WELCOME TO MAS' TIME MACHINE

Today is 29 FEBRUARY 1808.

Please enter the number of WEEKS and DAYS you wish to teleport in time.

At this point, Miss Loi suddenly remembered that she still has to go for her hair salon appointment today (29 February 2008)! As she can’t miss this one cos she needs to look good heading into her intensive March holiday tuition sessions, can you please help get her back in time for her appointment?

頑張って!!!

If this is truly a time machine, just send yourself back to, say, 1 Feb 2008 and make an appointment for 26 Feb 2008 (1 day before he escaped).

Then, you can avoid the long jams at the causeway.

Also, you can tip off the authorities that they better watch the Limping Terrorist the following day when he asks to go to the toilet, and also to have the STAR teams and SpecOps standing by outside at Whitley Road area.

    😀

Awww c'mon Fox don't be like some of Miss Loi's students who always seem to possess fantastic imagination when it comes to shortcuts!

Simple knowledge of arithmetic addition and multiplication are all you need for this one 😉

Shingo-san, Can you hear Miss Loi's faint voice from 200 years ago thanking you for dropping by Jφss Sticks?

HAM, Miss Loi's hairdo has always been posted up all over this website. Don't think your gf will be interested once she has seen it.

    Hmmm...
    2008-1808 = 200yrs
    1yr = 52 weeks
    200yrs =52 X 200
    =10400 weeks
Since its already Feb 29 1808 and you only need to teleport 200 yrs into Feb 29 2008, you need to teleport only 10400 weeks?

Or you can teleport far more into the future where the ah beng is more successful and rich to propose to you? 🙂

Oh finally Hiro the Bypasser offers hope for Miss Loi to get out of this time warp!

But alas, like many math exam questions things are often not so straightforward.

You see Mas' Time Machine required inputs first in weeks and then whatever days that were leftover.

Yes a year has 52 weeks and a week has 7 days but a typical year also has 365 days. But is 52 weeks = 365 days??? Spanning across 200 years, if Miss Loi only teleports 10400 weeks, she's gonna have to re-teach many tuition sessions all over again!

Also the many leaps that she had done would surely have affected the calculation somewhat ... sigh ... looks like she's gonna be stuck here for awhile 🙁

    hmmm...
    A typical year = 365 days
    200 typical years =365 X 200 = 73000 days?
    7 days = 1 week
    73000 days= 73000 / 7 = 10428.571 weeks = 10428weeks and 6 days? 🙁

If all fails, pls teleport back to tutor ByPassing in his early days so that in his later life he could save a certain sexy math cher...

Heeee ... the task of saving Miss Loi is never straightforward but it's not that difficult actually. Here're somemore hints:

    1. You cannot treat 1808 as a full year since it's starting at 29 Feb.
    2. Neither can you treat 2008 as a full year since Miss Loi needs to get back to 29 Feb (NOT 31 Dec)!
    3. A typical year has 365 days - what about those NON-typical years? What's the date of this entry?

    😉

    hmmm...

From 1808 to 2008 needs 200 years and there are 50 leap years in between and 150 typical years.

    In an Arithmetic Progression with a constant difference of 1 (i.e. 1, 2, 3, ... ), the total number of terms n is Tn - T1 + 1.

For e.g. there are obviously a total of 10 numbers between 1 to 10, so the total number of terms is 10 - 1 + 1.

    Similarly between 1808 and 2008, there are total 2008 - 1808 + 1 = 201 years!

However, since both 1808 and 2008 are not counted as full years and both are leap years, there will only be 48 leap years.

Yes, you're right that 1808 and 2008 are not included in full calculations, so there are a total of 199 years we're considering in the first part of the calculation.

Out of this 199 years, you should get 199/4 = 49 leap years (round down NOT up) BUT the full criteria that define leap years are:

Year is divisible by 4 AND not divisible by 100.
    OR
    Year is divisible by 400.

This effectively means that 1900 is NOT a leap year. So number of leap years from 1809 to 2007 is 49-1 = 48 (somehow you got this right under dubious circumstances -_-)

Since teleporting from 1808 Feb 29th, there will be 306 days to complete that year and we still require 60 days to get from 2008 Jan 1st to 2008 Feb 29th.

    1 Typical yr = 365 days or 52 weeks and 1 day.

    150 Typical yr = 365 X 150 = 54750 days.

    1 Typical leap yr = 365 days + 1 (366 days)

    48 Typical leap yr = 366 X 48 = 17568 days

    Days we have up to this point = (306 + 60 + 54750 + 17568) days = 72684 days.

    7 days = 1 week.

    72684 days = 10383 weeks & 4 days?

will you need 10383 weeks & 4 days to teleport? 🙂

    CORRECT ANSWER:

    Total no. of typical years = 199-48 = 151
    ⇒ # of days from typical years = 151 x 365 = 55115 days

Total no. of leap years = 48
    ⇒ # of days from leap years = 48 x 366 = 17568 days

    Days from Mar 1 to Dec 31 1808 = 306 days
    Days from Jan 1 to Feb 29 2008 = 60 days

    Total number of days = 55115 + 17568 + 306 + 60 = 73049 days

    Total # of weeks and days = 73049/7 = 10435 weeks and 4 days.

You sent Miss Loi back to 2 March 2007! She now has to teach the 2007 Syllabus all over again!!! AAAAARGGGHHH!!!!

If I were faced with a real time machine, I'd teleport into the future, maybe like the year 2508 or 2876. So in other words, just anyhow whack some numbers in, as long as it's greater than 10,400 weeks (200 x 52) 🙂

Wouldn't want to go too far into the future though. There might be no more humans left on earth (all migrated to other colonies among the stars).

FoxTwo, are you asking Miss Loi to abandon her current batch of students, and at the same time deprive 500-800 years' of student batches their Mathematical Salvation???!!! Such heresy!

5th Grader Bypasser, Miss Loi has marked your assignment (see above in red). Looks like she's gonna be stuck in 2007 for awhile .... arrrrggghhhhh .....

Hmm...I see, i got my first step in counting the numbers of years wrong. No...its no dubious circumstances, I google on the list of leap years in between...hehe. I got 1 entire year missed out hence wrong in the weeks and days...(well, think of the bright side of stucking in 2007, its ur oldself who is doing all the teaching in that timeline, which means more time to shop...)

    P.S.Shouldn't 73049/7 = 10435 weeks and 5 days? 🙂

Michael J. Fox, Miss Loi has pressed and pressed the same buttons on her calculator a few times and the answer is still 73049 days = (10435 weeks x 7 days) + 4 days 😛

And did you really manually counted the number of leap years on the list???!!!
