Mr Loi, with something very complex
beneath that cap

Hello everyone.

This is Mr Loi and I’m a full-time tutor with more than 13 years of experience, specializing in A-Level H1 & H2 Mathematics.

I’ve been roped in recently to help out at Miss Loi’s Temple, and given that my sister is currently busy with calling up everyone on her long waiting list, I’ve been given extra work asked to write something on this blog in her absence.

Having just gone through some of the lamest most bizarre articles I’ve ever seen on this blog, ermm … I really don’t know where to start.

But since the H2 Maths Paper 2 is going to be held tomorrow, I thought I might just leave you with a list of pure maths topics that didn’t appear in Paper 1 (and what I think might come out in Paper 2):

  • Inequalities (Modulus Function)
  • Parametric Equations (Tangent/Normal, Volume of Revolution & possibly together with Integration by substitution/part)
  • Complex Numbers (Argand Diagrams, Loci)
  • Recurrence Relationships (Limit/Convergence) – 见机行事吧!
  • Matrices/System of Equations (Application-based)
  • Partial Fractions (Binomial Expansion)
  • Σ Notation (Method of Difference)
  • Differential Equations (Application-based)
  • Functions/Graph Transformation

At the same time, I’ve also worked out the solutions for Tuesday’s H2 Maths Paper 1. Do check if they tally with your answers and inform me if you have discover any mistake. Also, like what my sister have said, feel free to discuss in the comments below should you disagree with any of the answers/methods described within.

Ok that’s all from me for now. Happy revising your tutorials and all the best for your Paper 2 tomorrow!

P.S. I find that baseball cap pretty lame and silly. I will try to get the designer to remove it from my head soon.

がんばって!!!

    Alright guys, I've modified the workings for questions 10(ii)(b) and 10(ii)(c) to include the first term of 1.02 (as brought up by Kenny and highlighted by kid & marc) and changed the answers accordingly.

    Thanks for your feedback and do highlight if you find any further part(s) that needs to be amended.

    P.S. Someone: It wasn't stated explicitly in Qn 1 to find the exact value of a, so it should be ok to leave the answer in 3sf.

    All the best for tomorrow!

    For qn 10 (i), if you read carefully, the question is not asking for the sum of terms even though they asked what is the total amount.
    Look. at jan: $ 10
    Feb: $ 13
    so when will his account have $ 2000? the method of doing should be looking for the term that is $2000 and not the sum of terms. i clarified this with a teacher.

    Mr maths: I fully understand where you and your 'cher are coming from. First let me reproduce question 10(i) in its entirety:

    A student saves $10 on 1 January 2009. On the first day of each subsequent month she saves $3 more than in the previous month, so that she saves $13 on 1 February 2009, $16 on 1 March 2009, and so on. On what date will she first have saved over $2000 in total? [5]

    The way I read it is:
    She saves $10 on 1 Jan i.e. she puts in $10
    She saves $13 on 1 Feb i.e. she puts in $13
    She saves $16 on 1 Mar i.e. she puts in $16
    ...

    ∴ based on what the question says, saving over $2000 in total ⇒ she has put in over $2000 in total ⇒ $10 + $13 + $16 ... > $2000 i.e.

    S_n = {n/2}delim{[}{2a+(n-1)d}{]} > 2000

    But if you are to look for the term that is $2000 i.e.

    T_n = a + (n-1)d > 2000

    you're in fact looking at the month whereby she PUTS in $2000 for that month, which is different from saving over $2000 in total.
