GCE O-Level 2008 Oct/Nov Biology Paper 1 Suggested Answers & Solutions

(15)

UPDATE: Thanks to this request, I’ve finally done up my list of suggested answers for the Combined Science (Chemistry, Biology) 5154 Paper 1(see below)!

Apparently the Chemistry portion of the questions are exactly the same as those in 5116/01 - even though 5154 belongs to the old syllabus and 5116 is of the new syllabus!

If that’s the case, we now have the complete set of ‘O’ Level Oct/Nov 2008 Sciences’ Paper 1 solutions here - yay!

Hi again everyone!

IT’S FINALLY OVER!!!

To all poor Bionic students whose liberation has been delayed by a day, and to those of you who’re somehow still surfing this website instead of havoc-ing outside, burning your books, or tying up your classmate etc., I’ve finally, finally managed to grab hold of that Biology Paper 1 and done-up my list of suggested answers for yesterday’s Biology 5094/5100 Paper 1 MCQs to complete the 2008 O-Level Science series:

As usual, do leave a comment if you spot any mistake but be gentle in your homeostatic control ok? And please refrain from shouting into my stethoscope!

But whatever the case, it’s TIME TO ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAYS!!!

P.S. For a moment, I was glad to be rid of that stupid radioactive hairband cum atomic earring. But never in my life do I expect myself to be dressed up in some cosplay uniform *gasp*

i got 32/40 only. regarding bio mcq, question 27.
There have been misconceptions of part 4 being the stigma and not the ovum, and therefore the answer is A, instead of B. Can u convince us why part 4 is the ovum and not stigma?? (claim stigma appeared top usually)

btw, bio mcq seems slightly tougher to me as compared to previous years tys mcq qns. maybe bio p2 was easy so they made p1 harder. right?

    Hello chanhankiang:

For question 27, it’s important to first recognize where the stigmas are located within the flower, bearing in mind that not all flowers are … errr … born or look the same and hence their stigmas may not always be where you expect them to be.

Let’s revisit the diagram of question 27 which I’ve reproduced below:

    Flower Structure O-Level 2008 Oct/Nov Biology Qn 27

In the diagram above, a tell-tale sign would be the presence of the ‘compartments’ in the part labeled 4 - a sure sign of an ovary with its ovum in its sac.

If part 4 is the ovary, then we can say with confidence that the little tip at its end (labeled by me in red) would be its stigma, and we can deduce a pollen tube entering the ovule through a micropyle in the ovule wall as shown below:

Fertilization of the Flower in O-Level Oct/Nov 2008 Biology Qn 27

Unfortunately, illustrations in many textbooks and study guides tend to place the ovary near the bottom of the flower (see example below - notice where the ‘compartment’ is) and this probably caused many to believe the ovary to be Part 3.

Flower Structure as commonly depicted in textbooks

But I say again, not all flowers look the same!

Amanda ah … Day 28 would still be fertile because the ovulated egg is still present.

Whereas, the unfertilised egg would have shedded off the uterine lining by Day 7 - the end of menstrual cycle for most women.

The Singapore Government would be happy if everyone chooses option C though!

    Amanda says,

Huh? But then hor, but then hor, eggs can only be fertilized in fallopian tube what. Eggs would only be in fallopian tube at day 14 to 18. So the days for fertilization would be 11 to 21 because sperms can stay alive in the fallopian tube for around 3 days.

So by right both answer would be correct. But I chose day 28 cause it’s the first day of mensuration so egg how can get fertilised? (Even fertilised egg also cannot survive cause the uterine lining will be shed)

I didn’t chose day 7 because the sperms may stay in the fallopian tube for around 4 days then suay suay :P the eggs got released early because of stress or whatever leh?

The probability sounds stupid but bleh.

Amanda, but you know hor … 我们做女人的 hor … every woman is different. Menstruation (NOT mensuration - please don’t be haunted by Miss Loi and her maths anymore!) can last for as short as 3 days to as long as 7 days.

    Menstrual Cycle

Looking at the diagram above, the infertile period takes place approximately between Day 1 to Day 10 when the uterine lining breaks down and gets repaired slowly again. Ovulation in this period is unlikely until the spongy lining is thick enough i.e. around Day 14, after which fertilisation would be possible.

Fertilisation can sometimes take place in the uterus wall too, and if fertilisation occurs on Day 28, the uterine lining is thick enough for attachment of the fertilised egg to itself from which food and oxygen are obtained.
