2007 GCE O-Level Results – Revelations

(34)
Tuition given in the topic of Miss Loi the Tutor from the desk of Miss Loi at 5:25 pm (Singapore time)

Updated on
GCE O-Level 2007 Double Maths Grades

Salvation complete.

I’ve prepared tissues to cry today. Before I get my result I already started to cry liao!

The brilliant light was blinding, almost intimidating. A moment of hesitancy ensued, as many of Miss Loi’s charges still clung on to the disbelief that they now stood in awe before the white Gates of Salvation.

But take that final step they must, for the countless hours of sweat and tears and joss sticks sessions were certainly not meant for them to merely come here to watch a fireworks display, but to receive the Mathematical Nirvana that for many once seemed so distant.

And one by one they did, allowing themselves to be consumed by the light and finally casting the scourge that is the LMBFH Syndrome into the fiery pit of purgatory, fulfilling their destinies of Mathematical Salvation at last and emerging with the promised tears of joy.

1 for Emath and 2 for Amath. Damn amazing! I totally didn’t expect it at all!

Despite having the monthly bill of her sms doubling in just over two hours, the High Priestess is once again mighty proud of ALL her charges. For it was through THEIR EFFORTS that 100% managed to attain improvements in their grades, and that for those who took double Maths 78% achieved BOTH distinctions.

GCE O-Level 2007 Single Math Grades

As long as you’ve done your best and improved,
ALL of you have made Miss Loi proud!

And to counter the perception that tutors only promote their best students and ‘cull’ the weak, like what a certain principal allegedly did, it gives Miss Loi great pleasure to feel EVEN more proud of her group of supposedly ‘weaker’ single Maths students, the hardcore amongst the Last-Minute Buddha Foot Huggers in the terminal stage of the disease, whom 70% made the jump from F9 to at least a B4.

我拿到B4! 我从来没有拿过那么高分!

Oh she remembers the dark wintry night when many of you, ravaged by the disease and showing the terrifying symptoms of scoring less than 10% in every exam, being last in your level, having never done a full math paper before, knocked on the Temple Gates in a final plea for salvation, some slipping through (while Miss Loi was still putting on her makeup) as late as one month before the start of the Great War.

You. Yes you, many of whom were labelled “hopeless” and those with the “poorest of the poor grades” by your peers, by your supposed educators who abandoned and left you for dead, and most often or not by yourself.

Thanks to YOUR efforts, perseverance and determination, you finally broke free of the imaginary chains that bind you, ensuring that those late, late nights of thick joss sticks smoke choking the whole of Novena were worth it in the end.

I’m crying now because my frens couldn’t stay in the same JC as me!

So it’s happy endings once more, and time for the small matter of deciding where to go next.

For those of you who may be regretting or feeling emo on missing out on a certain course or institution due to a less than ideal aggregate score, peer pressure or otherwise, do understand that ultimately your future is always in your grasp and it’s up to you to make the best of it. A cheong hei Miss Loi shall repeat again that “one exam simply does not and will NOT determine your entire future and what you do in your lifetime“.

10 years down the road, you might just look back and realise how trivial all this can be.

The next step you take is always more important than the previous step you left behind.

Congratulations!
頑張って!!!

peekaBOO: Congratulations and your efforts have paid off! And Miss Loi will be glad if this blog has helped you in whatever little way 🙂

Ignorantsoup: There's no need to xian mu lah. You probably didn't need tuition when you were in Sec 4 anyway 🙂

HAM: Is there such a thing as an 'over mature student'??? Worried that the chair at The Temple might not fit your 'over mature' butt!

You: Don't feel so upset about your L1R5 as your aggregate score isn't that bad at all. Let me know which JC you intend to go and see you at the place with the two black dogs 🙂

P.S. Umm ... don't LOVE here LOVE there lah... 好肉麻!

Mintea: Looking at her privileged schoolmates, Miss Loi also wished she had a tutor when she was taking her Os last time 😕

FoxTwo: Random guesses (esp with such high deviations) won't get you nearer to the truth! At this rate, you'll fail your Approximations chapter! Tsk.

Yo miss loi hmm thanks for all de maths help as my A2 in E/A maths bear testament to it. HOWEVER i must say in singapore "one exam simply does not and will NOT determine your entire future and what you do in your lifetime“ is quite the contrary-.- due to my other subs - you know which -_-" - I cant do law....thats something that determines part of your future i suppose...

Well Miss Loi may not be familiar with the specifics of getting into law and the odds may seemingly be stacked against you and this may sound cliché BUT if you believe that the door is closed then it will be, and vice versa.

Often it all boils down to how badly you want something.

    Good luck!

Yeah i know about the idea of "when you want something badly you'll succeed irregardless of the odds" but even if I were to do law in my latter year's it wouldnt be the same..anyway miss loi could ya give an update on what is changed on the new syllabus as one of my friends may be retaking her maths and I need to coach >.>

Is your friend retaking EMath or AMath? If she's retaking as a private candidate, Miss Loi believes that she has the option of choosing between 4017 (Old Syllabus) or 4016 (New Syllabus) for EMath, and between 4018 (Old) or 4038 (New) for AMath.

To briefly summarize, for the new EMath 4016 syllabus,

    Out goes:

    • Transformation
    • Loci

    In comes:

    • Very large and very small numbers i.e. mega/million (106), giga/billion (109), tera/trillion (1012), micro (10−6), nano (10−9), and pico (10−12)
    • Applications of mathematics in practical situations:

      • Compound interest formula: Total amount = P(1+{r/100})^n
      • Taxation
    • Standard deviation
    • Box-and-Whisker Plots
    • Sets
    • Matrices (no inverse matrices)
    • Circular Measure
    • Solving Quadratic Equations using Completing the Square Method
    • Graphs of the forms: y = ±(xp)2 + q and y = ±(xa)(xb)

And you can now use your favourite calculator for both Paper 1 & 2! Not sure if it's a good thing though.

    For the AMath syllabus (4038),

    Out goes:

    • Vectors
    • Relative Velocity (can almost hear a collective cheer across Singapore for this one)
    • Approximations
    • Functions (but Modulus Functions are still in)
    • Circular Measure
    • Permutations & Combinations

    In comes:

    • Partial Fractions
    • Sum & Product of Roots
    • Plane Geometry
    • Curves & Circles
    • Further Trigonometry (Addition Formula, R-Formula, Factor Formula & Double Angle Formula)
    • Differentiation: Increasing & Decreasing Functions e.g.

      • Increasing function: y=x^2-1, \frac{\mathrm{d} y}{\mathrm{d} x} > 0 for x > 0
      • Decreasing function: y=\frac{1}{x+1}, \frac{\mathrm{d} y}{\mathrm{d} x} < 0 for x > 0

Do check out the detailed syllabus at SEAB's site for a complete picture.

    Hmmm...

    Sets
    Matrices
    Standard Deviation
    Vectors
    Functions
    Permutations & Combinations

They sound reeeeaaaalllyyyy familiar, like the stuff we do to get the paper to say we know our computer thingies (IT industry).

Ok SMC I'm hirin' you to tutor me on the above subjects... got discount anot, since it's a subset and combination of the syllabuses? 😀

Kiroii: standard deviation and Box and Whisker plots are all part of statistics. Probably the MOE wants to produce more stock investors from the new batches 😛

Oh and you're most certainly NOT on the list in the picture, as you've never set foot in the Temple Grounds and Miss Loi has never even seen you before!

FoxTwo: At your age-group (50s? 40s? OK FINE - 30s?) You still need to take exams meh? And why are you picking most of the topics that are out of syllabus?

Eh, not I pick one hor. As long as the architecture of computers don't change, they'll continue to work the same way. Hence, the maths "syllabus" will remain the same until a revolutionary computing device is invented that works radically differently.

There are other topics too (most notably, binary and hexadecimal number systems), but since you don't teach 'em I don't expect you to tutor them 🙂

    Hmm ... a suspicious man ...

Miss Loi suspects that your maths tests were always based upon 20 marks. And she suspects that's probably why you (nor anyone else) could never score beyond that!

Anyway that comment of yours was deemed 'unsuspicious' enough to escape the spambox's suspicion. So you're not that suspicious afterall! 😀

    Welcome to Jφss Sticks Fiqa!

Regarding your situation, there are several questions you need to honestly ask yourself:

    1. How long have you been 'failing'? Only since the beginning of this year as you said, or is this a long-time problem that has yet to be rectified?

    2. Is there anyone guiding you? Someone whom you can ask? E.g. Teacher? Senior? Anyone good in maths? If so, do you think he/she is the right person to consult? 'Study friends' who're not really an 'authority' in the subject are not counted!

    3. What do you do when you found out that your answer is wrong? Ask someone? Try to figure out it all over again yourself? Or throw one side and try other questions?

    Rotation of earth .

24hrs to take one rotation ,earth itself so.
24=360deegree angle to reach same possition.
the round shape of rotation around the sun,
    1hr=15*12 =180, 2*180=360,
365 days round , rotation around the sun.
speed=s,distance=x , to reach the same possition but verying possition due to hexagen rotation in 3D
    delta x,
to the same possition it take (delta y ,years) at same
    point calculate.

applying to calculas 0 to infinity integration.
delta y , with distance to sun.

applying intial to infinity timing below
    delta y*365 ,zero to infinity.
    ie, 1year=365,half of 1year=356/2 =182.5 (182days 12hours)
year 182 to next 365 days ,(273days,12hours)full rotation.
182.5+182.5=365 days, calculating 0 to infinity.
    365,year 0 to 2*182.5,365+1/2 to,2*182.5 infinity.
applying calculas , can determin the path of earth rotating
    speed (s)=distance(t)/time(t)
spins like electric 3d circle ,can also calculate no: circles.sun is still in motion
