# Men & Their Variations According To Miss Loi

(25)
Tuition given in the topic of E-Maths Tuition Questions from the desk of at 9:53 pm (Singapore time)

Updated on

Miss Loi has often been asked by friends on what kind of men attracts her. Well, being a maths tutor means that the ‘men’ in her life consists mainly of hot-blooded teens fresh within the tentative stages of their post-pubescent life. Actually, based on her observations, some of them don’t even seem to have reached this stage yet 😛

For the record, given the chasmic age gap, Miss Loi is most definitely NOT into the genre of hot-blooded teens.

After a bit of soul-searching, she concluded that first, being a high-maintenance pragmatic person, her attraction to men is directly proportional to how much money they spend on her and second, being a vain-pot someone who takes pride in maintaining her oh-so-youthful looks, this attraction is also inversely proportional to the number of times men criticize her looks.

In fact, she’d find you most attractive if you can successfully work out these variations (or something similar) in your E-Maths paper this coming Monday or Tuesday!

Let the force of attraction between Miss Loi and men be F Newtons.

1. This force is directly proportional to the square of the money, \$ dollars, that a man spends on her.

When a man spends a certain amount of money on her, the force is 100 Newtons. What is the force when this amount of money is doubled?

2. The square of the number of times a man criticises her looks, i.e. q2, is inversely proportional to F. For a particular value of q, F = 37 Newtons. Find the value of F when this value of q is halved.

Questions on Variations are as straightforward as they come and it would be TRAGIC if you lose any mark here. The following should be familiar to you by now:

Direct Variation
If yx, then y = kx

Inverse Variation
If y, then y =

Having said that, there’re some bad recurring careless mistakes committed by students when it comes to these questions which we shall see if they surface in you answers here in the comments.

NOTE: Those who know Miss Loi really well will know that she’s just sprouting nonsense, except for the part on the E-Maths question of course.

Thanks Mgccl. So are you going to try increasing the amount of Newtons, especially for Part 1? Miss Loi accepts Paypal ... heee.

I like this tongue-in-cheek representation, even though I returned most of maths equation to my teacher.

Is the Law of Attraction being re-written here? Definitely so.

Ed, indeed the Law of Attraction has been rewritten, as far as Miss Loi is concerned. And it even comes with a standardized unit of measure (Newtons)!

Visitor, thanks for the attempt but Miss Loi thinks you've just committed some of the careless mistakes that she had hinted in this entry.

First read the two parts of the question very carefully, for they are phrased a little differently.

For part 2, F is inversely proportional to q. So when q is halved, should the value of F increase or decrease?

If you can show your workings here, we can point out where the mistakes lie.

Awwww Peter, Miss Lo's sooOOoOo sorry to have doubted your tycoon calibre and hurt you in the process.

So, to look away from the horse's mouth and make it up to you, let's set a date to go shopping shall we?

Ok it's settled then, see you in Shinjuku in a week's time! 😉

P.S. Don't leave home without your gold/platinum/diamond cards!

First one is 400....
F=km2
when F=100, m=say , M,
100/M2 = k

So, when M is doubled,
F=(2M)2(100/M2)
F=4M2 (100/M2)
=400Newtons

Well done! You can also do it this way (not that it matters much anyway):

F = km2
So let 100 = km2

Now F = k(2m)2
= 4(km2)
= 4(100) = 400 Newtons of attraction!

The point Miss Loi would like to highlight though is that when it comes to squaring, some students have a nasty habit of doing 2M2 instead of (2M)2!

Second One is 148
q2=k/37
So, for a particular value of q, say Q,
k=37Q2
When Q is halved,
(Q/22=(37Q2)/F
So, F=148 Newtons

No sweat right? Always check whether the variation is a direct or inverse one before your proceed and after you've obtained your answer, check if it's logical i.e. when q is decreased should F increase or decrease?

But do take note at the different ways the two parts are phrased. Part one says "... the square of money, \$ dollars, ..." while Part 2 says "... square of the number of times ... i.e. q2 ... ". So be very careful when reading the questions.

123, WRONG WRONG WRONG!

By Einstein's Third Law of Motion,
Whenever a particle A exerts a force on another particle B, B simultaneously exerts a force on A with the same magnitude in the opposite direction, these two forces act along the same line.

So, unless miss loi is travelling at the speed of c(speed of light, by Einstein's Theory of Relativity), the force of attaraction will be repelled, since for every action has an equal and opposite reaction!

and miss loi did not state the energy efficiency! what is energy is lost as heat as light!?

Another lame article A new trigo question has just been posted up so head over there if you're game on trying another important question for your upcoming E-Maths paper.

Carrie: Have a look at the short and sweet workings posted here. Very simple right? Oh and thanks for the digging 🙂

Nemee: Retired teacher?! Goodness gracious! Does Miss Loi really sound like a retiree? Does she sound that old to you?!

[...] Details are sketchy at present. Some were reported to have been felled by the lethal swarms of tiny pallets (each carrying 1-2 marks) launched by the enemy at the start. But ultimately the enemy’s charge was valiantly halted, albeit with a few marks lost here and there compared to my friend who only lost a total of 2 marks. At the same time Miss Loi is silently glad that some of her prophecies have indeed came true. [...]
