Happy Teachers’ Day

(9)
Posted at 1:45 pm by Miss Loi in Miss Loi the Tutor

Teachers' Day Card To all the ‘Chers of Singapore, hope you’ve enjoyed the cutesy gifts and cards from your students, some of whom probably took precious time off their prelims studies to make them.

A shame really … the timing of this day, since it’s not even a common date across the world to begin with.

May you be rejuvenated by the recognition and homage you deserve, for your monumental effort in this era of rebellious internet-enabled students, elaborate lesson plans, multiple CCAs, and lengthy torturous staff meetings … a time when we all acknowledge that teaching has become increasingly challenging, especially if you’re one of those who joined the profession simply to teach.

Nonetheless, here’s wishing all ‘Chers a Happy Teachers’ Day!

Jφss Sticks To Be Extinguished Tonight

(9)
Posted at 1:35 pm by Miss Loi in Study Break

UPDATE: As some of you might already be aware of, the scheduled maintenance did not take place.

The feeling now is like after seeing your own child being whisked into the operating theatre, the doctor tells you the next morning that the surgery was not performed at all, and will have to be rescheduled to another day.

Don’t bother to check your calendar. It’s not April 1st.

With a heavy heart and a crackling voice, it pains Miss Loi to announce that at 11pm on the night of Malaysia’s 50th Birthday (31 August 2007), Jφss Sticks will be all but snuffed out.

Sincere apologies in advance to those who never get to read this and try to access after 11pm – only to catch the last glowing cinders of Miss Loi’s great labour for the past six months, if they’re lucky.

After all that’s been said and done, it’s really sad this has to happen. But even as Miss Loi fights to hold back her tears, she vows that she’ll be back …

… once that damned hardware maintenance is done by 5am the next day, maybe longer.

But she’ll be back. That’s a promise.

The All-in-One Package

(15)
Posted at 7:07 pm by Miss Loi in E-Maths Questions

As typical Singaporeans, we all love our AIO packages. From wash/cut/treatment/rebond/blow/dry hair salon packages to body scrub/facial/massage/honey milk bath spa packages, they usually offer (in theory) better value over the sum of their parts.

In exams, however, evil AIO packaged questions (i.e. those that test you knowledge of multiple topics in one go) offer students plenty of nail-biting moments and the unique opportunity to experience a panic attack.

As a sadist an esteemed educator, it is perhaps natural that Miss Loi has a mild fetish for a question like this:

N.B. This is E-Maths Paper One so NO CALCULATORS ALLOWED!

A, B and C are the vertices of an equilateral triangle which lie on a circle of radius r cm. Using as much information given in the table below as necessary,

  sin cos tan
60o sqrt{3}/2 1/2 √3

Triangle within Circle

  1. Show that the length L cm, of a side of ΔABC is r√3 cm
  2. By comparing the area of ΔABC and the circle, or otherwise, show that 3√3 < 4π.
  3. List all even integers in the range of 3√3 to 4π.

There you have it.

Something to send you scurrying up and down the chapters of that imaginary textbook in your overworked mind.

Rejuvenated by her facial package yesterday, Miss Loi shall be nice this time and hint that for this particular one, you should bookmark the chapters on Trigonometry, Rational/Irrational Numbers and Mensuration (for once, let’s not joke about this chapter title ok?).

In addition, you’ll need in abundance material from another chapter not found in your book called Common Sense.

But frankly, once you know what you’re supposed to do, this question is actually pretty easy. Hence no formula listed here this time to spoil the fun!

How To Fail Your Exam Before It Fails You

(8)
Posted at 5:35 pm by Miss Loi in Miss Loi the Tutor

Actually it’s quite easily done.

News have filtered in from the frontline of students suffering panic attacks in exam halls. Though it wasn’t their Maths papers, nonetheless Miss Loi shall now observe a minute’s silence in their memory.

*a minute’s silence* … Ok done.

Now look at this question which frequently appears in your Paper 1 to catch the anxious and the weary:

Two variables x and y are related by an equation, y = kxn, where k and n are constants.

State the value of n if

  1. x and y are respectively the radius and volume of a sphere.
  2. x and y are respectively the base and height of a triangle with an area of 10 square units.

To many it’s so easy it’s laughable … in the comfort of your cozy Hello Kitty-filled bedroom of course.

All you need, quite simply, is some knowledge of indices, formulae for area of triangle/volume of sphere, AND the ability to comprehend what the question asks.

But in exam conditions, some will always contrive to confuse their answers for k and n, or waste time producing tons of irrelevant workings when the question simply asks you to STATE. Note: ‘State’ ⇒ no workings required!

Anxiety Leads To Fear. Fear Leads To Panic

In all likelihood, this mess probably occurs when you’re already having trouble with the previous three (or two? or one?) questions in the same paper.

Die lah all dunno … if this simple one cannot do, then later those difficult ones how? … must make sure I get this one right first … $%&# still stuck! … why those I study never come out? … die lah! … ‘Cher will hate me! … Miss Loi will hate me! … I have failed my entire ancestral line! … ok don’t panic I can do this … how come stare at this question for 15 mins still cannot do?!

* … another minute’s silence observed *

A real pity. In theory, if you’ve routinely done what Miss Loi told you here (in red), you shouldn’t really have anything to worry about.

But we are different in our own ways. That’s why talks, discussions and articles on handling exam stress abound.

Different we may be, but Miss Loi would like you to know that everyone suffers from some form of anxiety before and during exams.

Yes even that straight-faced top student in your class. *Even that smug friend of yours who always claim to have finished study everything. And even that foreign cyborg (he’s still 50% human afterall).

Exam Stress
You’re not alone. They’re all with you.

So don’t let it grow into something more sinister. The idea is to make sure you walk out of that hall with no regret, no matter what happens.

It’s nigh impossible to get everything right. Even Miss Loi makes careless mistakes at times (though she’s really good at covering-up). There’s no regret in doing your best and having shown all your workings. But you will regret that panic attack for years to come, should that happen.

While the thought of Miss Loi’s radiant glowing face (thanks to her range of cosmetics) may serve as your source of inspiration in times of need, ultimately it’s your exam.

Not your teacher’s, not Miss Loi’s, not your parents’, and certainly not your ancestors’. To hell with them.

So let no one intimidate your mind during the exam. Answer to no one but yourself. And there’re only two words in this answer: NO REGRETS.

Good luck!

Geometry – A Pre-Pubescent Question

(13)
Posted at 5:02 pm by Miss Loi in E-Maths Questions

Remember those Sec One days? The days when you walked into school with a stupid-looking water bottle slung across your chest and, for the boys, when the hair was just starting to grow on your legs (please don’t think sideways. tsk.).

Sadly, many students studying for their final exams tend to get so caught-up with major NC-16 topics like Transformations and Vectors that they’ve forgotten about these good o’ pre-pubescent days.

So when they see something like this in the exam,

Diagram of n-sided polygonABCDEFG is part of a regular n-sided polygon. Given that ∠CBF = ∠EFB = 45o, find n.

… they end up scrutinizing the diagram (if there’s one) for long periods, wondering if it had been drawn correctly.

Now given that a question on polygons will almost always appear somewhere in your Paper 1, Miss Loi shall help refresh your post-puberty memory by pulling this straight out from the cartoon-laden pages of your Sec One textbook:

Sum of interior angles in a n-sided polygon = (n-2)180o

Can already hear all the “Chezzzz … so simple!“.

Welcome to the egoistic world of adulthood.
