Two O’Clock On A Thursday Afternoon

For the brave comrades who fought alongside each other in the epical Great War of 2007, your days of limbo will soon be over.

The agonizing silence following that fateful charge on Halloween’s Eve will soon be lifted.

Time to end your week of ponning classes to hallucinate your results. Time to end those listless days of not having the mood to do anything. Time to end your nights of nightmares, to end your sudden heightened sense of feeling demoralized, and time to stop calling Miss Loi to ask her “HOW?!“.

For at two o’clock tomorrow (probably a little later, subject to the length of your principal’s lullabic speech exalting your school’s great achievements), all of you – boys and girls, elite and neighbourhood, the ‘smart’ and the ‘hopeless’, teachers’ pets and teachers’ pests, Potato-Eaters and Ah Bengs/Lians, foreign mercenary cyborgs and Privatus Candidatii, shall stand as equals for once to receive your final judgement.

Where all shall be reviewed – your results, your class rival’s, your best friend’s, your mom’s market friend’s third son’s etc. Where parents will finally find closure to their children’s fate in the last Great War.

Yes it could’ve been after Chinese New Year (to spare you from being ‘interviewed’ by relatives). Yes you balk at the possibility of leaving your new-found JC friends. Yeah yeah your entire future/destiny/universe/afterlife depends on this.

But as what Miss Loi said this time last year:

… one exam simply does not determine your entire future and what you do in your lifetime.

The road ahead is just too long for this.

So when it’s finally your turn to stand before your teacher tomorrow, look him/her in the eye and take heed that the only person who’s really judging you is yourself. No matter what the verdict is be comforted that you have simply done your best.

As for her students, due to the unfortunate fact that Miss Loi lacks the mutant ability to multiply herself to be at various schools tomorrow, it is nonetheless fitting that you take your last steps to enter the shining Gates of your Mathematical Salvation on your own.

Even though she can’t be there, she shall definitely be looking forward to your tears of joy.

All The Best!
がんばって!!!

The excitement's really building up now. Miss Loi's pretty sure there's a massive outbreak of insomnia across Singapore tonight!
