ong: Used to teach PSLE maths many, many years ago but these days Miss Loi & PSLE maths have a bit of a 河水不犯井水 relationship (i.e. River water don't mess with water from the well ... you get the idea).

wilson: Simply being able to do a couple of naughty PSLE maths 2009 questions means that they will be better than us meh? The road is still loooong ....

mathslover: There are already TONS of full step-by-step solutions (that carefully avoided algebra/simultaneous equations like a plague) to that naughty Jim & Ken barter exchange question on the net if you google it.

So don't think it's necessary for Miss Loi to 插一脚 into PSLE affairs here

The 2009 paper has a question that I couldn't do without resorting to algebra! Well yes they're taught algebra, but not simultaneous equations nor dealing with more than one variable!

I wonder what the marking scheme would look like for this question:

Jim bought some chocolates and gave half of it to Ken. Ken bought some sweets and gave half of it to Jim. Jim ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates. The ratio of Jim’s sweets to chocolates became 1:7 and the ratio of Ken’s sweets to chocolates became 1:4. How many sweets did Ken buy?

And while we are at it, can Miss Loi attempt this Primary School Style?

My son just sat for his PSLE maths paper. Conclusion ; he could do it, but I can't !

The fact is, we are having the next generation who are better than us, that is the intension of Singapore MOE.

All these questions frequently appear in maths olympiad for primary school. Nowadays very common

I am pretty surprised that you didnt teach primary 6. I guess you are specialised in your own way.

Hello miy0k0. Yes PSLE is coming soon but you shouldn't have anything to fear if you've been practising your maths regularly.

Unfortunately, Miss Loi's questions are all dealing with Sec School Maths so it's best if you can ask your teacher/tutor or lookup PSLE assessment books (obviously not those mentioned above if you're not confident of your math foundation!) for relevant/important maths questions.

These questions can be solved by heuristics approach... The model approach is normally used to solve stimultaneous ad fraction questions.
