Something landed on my lap this afternoon, followed by what I could almost hear was a thousand screams of anguish coming at the end of today’s H2 Maths Paper 1.

It’s been a full day of classes for me so it has taken a while (with whatever time I have) to complete the 2010 set of ‘A’ Level Maths:

I’ve been busy over the weekend with my classes and it seems that I’ve been missing out a bit of action on the H2 Maths Paper 2. Anyway I’ve found some time today to work out the following H1 Maths 8863 Paper 1 and H2 Maths 9740 Paper 2 (yes I know I’m bit WOLS on this one ) just to complete my set of A Level Maths suggested solutions for this year (2009):

As usual, please check if they tally with your solutions and inform me (gently) in the comments below if you discover any mistake or disagree with any of the answers described within. This is especially so for the H1 Maths paper which there has been an absence of any discussion on it, as far as I know.

Now that the A-Level maths papers are over, I sincerely hope that all of you have managed to handle this year’s maths papers with confidence. I also hope that my shortlist of probable pure maths topics (a number of which indeed came out) has benefitted some of you in your last-minute revision.

Anyway, it’s time now to focus on the rest of your papers and try not to be caught up with all the speculative talk on moderation and worry about what grades you’re going to get (after all, no one really knows). Instead be glad that you have done your best and strive to work harder for your remaining papers!

It is most certainly not the actual marking scheme from Cambridge, so don’t be quick to assume the end of the world for your Paper 1 should some of your steps and answers be different from mine. You’ve probably been told countless times that marks will still be awarded even though your answer may not be complete, as long as you have presented your concepts and ideas clearly

Of course, do kindly point out any mistake that you may spot in the solution. [disclaimer]Afterall, they were compiled rather quickly using whatever spare time I have left after my classes these two days.[/disclaimer]

Now that we’re halfway there, it’s time to focus on the following topics in your H2 Maths Paper 2 (while the H1 folks can forget about maths for a long, long time).

Pure Maths Topics

1. Differential equations, integration by parts
2. Applications of Differentiation (maxima & minima problems, connected rate of change, equations of tangent & normal)
3. Vectors (foot of perpendicular distance, area of parallelograms/triangles etc.)
4. Functions (composite functions, inverse functions, transformations)
5. Inequalities
6. Complex numbers (loci – hope you have your compass with you IF it comes out)

Statistics Topics

Though questions on statistics may appear to be quite random and unforeseeable at times, do spend time to look through the statistics portion of the 2007 and 2008 H2 Maths Paper 2 to have a feel of the section. It will be manageable as long as you are confident in your probability concepts. The importance of the 3 Cs in this section i.e. reading the questions/stories Calmly, Carefully and Correctly cannot be overemphasized. Make sure you iron out each question’s logic first instead of charging in like a mad man/woman!

• Probability (Venn diagram, probability tree, conditional probability, permutations & combinations)
• Methods & techniques of sampling (do spend bit of time reading it up)
• Poisson & binomial distributions (know the conditions for Normal approximations & perform continuity correction)
• Normal distribution (linear combinations of normal variables: sums and multiples)
• Linear regression (transforming a set of non-linear data to linear form, correlation coefficient r²=b∙d)
• Sampling & hypothesis testing (Central Limit Theorem, calculation of unbiased estimates of population mean & variance from a sample)

How time flies and the ‘A’ Level H1 Maths / H2 Maths papers are now upon us.

Though I’m very busy with my classes with just days to go, I would like to take the time to say something (after I’ve been ‘poked’ (Facebook-style) by my sister) to those of you taking your H1/H2 Maths papers this week.

At this point, I would like to say that no matter how tough your prelim papers were, please be confident that most ‘A’ Level questions are ‘do-able’ PROVIDED you are firm and confident in your concepts.

Even if you’ve always found certain topics to be tough, remember that there are still a lot of easy marks to collect everywhere in the paper – so don’t give up just because you can’t do part (a) i.e. even if you can’t prove (a), you can still quote the prove directly for part (b).

Therefore, even if you can’t do the plane portion of the vector question, you should still be able to do the straight line portion. And even if you can’t prove the differential equation, you should instinctively use the proof to complete the integration (via Separation of Variables) in the subsequent part

Last but not least, like what my sister has been telling her O Level students, please follow the 5 Cs and read the questions Calmly, Carefully and Correctly before answering them, lookout for Clues contained within them, and do those which you are more Confident in solving first.

While my poor sister is still mired in churning out her 2009 exam papers, I would like to take the opportunity to say a big

to all who are getting your A-Level results today.

Though this has replaced your O-Levels as your most important results to date, the following quote (stolen from my sister)

One exam simply does not determine your entire future and what you do in your lifetime.

is still very relevant to this exam as it did for your O-Levels.

For it’s worth noting that, regardless of the course (preferred or otherwise) you end up taking in your tertiary institution, bigger and progressively challenging trials await you in the future, and it’s often your PASSION that will carry you through at the end of the day.
